Sam Fender has handed over the complete sum of his £25k award winnings to the MVT, which functions to preserve the Britain's independent live music spots.

The star was awarded the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also took part, raising over £100k on his live tour to support 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation assisted locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges caused by floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues obtained funding support in upgrading infrastructure and gear that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

Fender is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

When they received the award in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, vocalist Cocker declared that the band would give their winnings to the charity the charity.

During 2002, artist the artist shared her bounty between multiple charities, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

Two years ago, they contributed their prize money to the community center that developed their group, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year M People gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," remarked artist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust announced it had rescued a couple of small stages in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in that area and the other in that location were purchased under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
