Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls from the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
